Together we make a Family!

15th May is observed as the ‘International Day of Families’. This Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 and stresses on the importance of having a healthy and happy familial relationship. Families as such are a vital foundation of any society—and at Sense India we recognize the importance of families as children's first teachers.

The symbol of the International Day of Families consists of a solid green circle with an image in red. The image is a simple drawing of a heart and a house which indicates that families are the center of societies providing a stable and supporting home for people of all ages.

In the purview of the above perspective, Sense India has come across many families of people with deafblindness who take on multiple roles like…

Implementers and Teachers:
Recent age therapists and educators believe in the potential of families’ involvement in training of people with deafblindness. Today, parents are active partners - they not only implement professional advice but also undergo training to learn more. Often in case of absence or low availability of educators, parents play the role of teachers.

Observers:
Often families have unique insights gleaned from their day-to-day experiences of living with individuals with deafblindness. These insights help special educators in planning Individual Education Plan or activities accordingly for children with deafblindness. It contributes a lot towards their growth.

Mutual support providers and Advocates:
Sense India has formed a national network of parents of children with deafblindness called PRAYAS to meet, share and take up local issues that affect them. These networks have become very important local bodies that advocate for inclusion and against discrimination in various districts across India. They fight for the rights of their children.

You can also join the drive by supporting Sense India in helping the families of children with deafblindness. Your contribution means a lot, as we work with individuals with deafblindness and their families through every transition in life.

  1. Family is the most crucial part of life....it helps us grow by providing love, warmth, values, protection and care!...For a deafblind child family is the only support for everything. We at SenseIndia try and ensure that the family bonds grow stronger even if the child cant speak, see or hear because inability to say doesnt mean-nothing to say!
